Trash Collector "Rescues" Flags
When waste collector Jeff Olsen spots a flag someone has simply thrown out, he grabs it and brings it with him back to the garage. He's picked up hundreds of Christian flags, American flags, POW MIA flags and many other flags in very poor condition. The biggest flag he's ever saved was an American flag as tall as Olsen’s height. Olsen has a Stars and Stripes in the cab of his truck, some hang in the office of his company, and another fly outside of the entrance, but the rest of the American flags are given to the American Legion for proper disposal that is by burning it in a dignified way.
Over the past 18 months alone, Olsen has rescued more than 250 American Flags. Out of respect for the flag, he feels like he’s got to do it and it feels good to save a flag. There's a lot of other waste collectors out there doing the same thing saving Christian flags, auto racing flags, American flags, nautical flags and etc.
Olsen believes most people throw out old American flags because they don't know exactly what to do with them. The Pentagon says they should be disposed of with dignity, preferably by burning them. But today's synthetic fibers create toxic fumes, which is why they must be sent to the American Legion for crematorium.
