Many people have found sistray.exe on their computers and wondered just exactly what it was. Is it the new version of systray.exe? Or is it possibly a fake?
Sistray.exe is not an update for systray.exe.
Sistray.exe belongs to products created by Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. It allows the user to interact with hardware such as the Mirage 3 graphics chip without having to follow a complex file path into their Windows operating system.
This file gets its name from its orientation on the Windows graphical user interface (GUI–a term usually associated with Linux). It creates an icon in the bottom right of the computer screen (the system tray) and allows the user to interact with Mirage 3 via that icon.

Mirage 3 is a graphics card that allows for high-speed, high-resolution graphics. While a system tray icon is for this interface is convenient, it is certainly not necessary. Computer owners may delete this file without any harmful effects if they feel nervous about it.
Unfortunately, a file of this name has also been linked to the Trojan virus Prova. Malicious programs will typically name their files after non-malicious files in order to avoid detection. This is one way they keep users from deleting files, both in the main memory and also in the Windows registry.
When is sistray.exe harmful?
If you have run a virus check on your computer and come up with the Prova Trojan horse virus, there is a very good chance that your sistray file is also malicious.
Another way to see if this file is genuine is to check the file properties. If you don’t see that it is owned by Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. or the Mirage 3 or other graphics card, there’s a very good chance you have a fake on your hand.
One of the worst things about viruses is that they leave damage on your computer that even anti-virus programs don’t always fix. Every program that runs on your computer inserts at least one file into a Windows database known as the registry. Usually a program will insert several of these files.
The Windows registry coordinates process files so that programs don’t have to look through the entire computer system in order to find the programs and hardware they interact with. For example, it will direct the graphical interface output directly towards the monitor’s inverter. That way, the information doesn’t waste CPU processing power as it tries out the speakers.
